H1N1 Flu Virus Facts

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, the H1N1 flu virus officially emerged in April of 2009.   The H1N1 flu virus is grabbing more attention by governments around the world because it is a new strain of influenza.   Whenever there is a new influenza it means that people do not have a solid natural immunity to the flu virus and this is one of the reasons why the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared it a pandemic influenza virus.   There is much debate on the H1N1 virus.   Some people feel it is nothing to worry about, while others are very scared and uncertain about how to prepare themselves.   Regardless of where you stand this article is about making sure you know what you can do to prevent getting H1N1 flu virus, the regular seasonal flu, or even a common cold.   The first step is to stay positive as well as stress free about this situation and be proactive about our health!

  1. If you look at the pandemic of 1977, when H1N1 or Swine Flu re-emerged after a 20 year absence, there is no shift in age-related mortality pattern. The 1977 “pandemic” is, of course, not considered a true pandemic by experts today, for reasons that are not entierely consistent. It certainly was an antigenic shift and not an antigenic drift. As far as I have been able to follow the current events, the most significant factor seems to have been that most people, who were severely affected, were people with other medical conditions.
