Maintaining Your Weight Loss Goal For Life

We are all in this together! Make your exercise routine interesting enjoyable and fun! If you need extra help to get you started there are natural supplements to get you in the right frame of mind!

Weight loss can be an overwhelming subject.  Most of us are unhappy and frustrated with some part of our body. Women are famous for saying things like, “I just want to loose weight in my legs or my bum.” Just remember there is no such thing as spot reducing.    The fact is you must eat healthy and have regular exercise!  We all know this, but we are always looking for some miracle.  When loosing weight, you loose fat all over the body.  Therefore, it is important to have a total body workout so that you can obtain your desired results. Doing crunches will strengthen your core and tighten your abs, but it will not burn fat just in the abdomen.  The more muscle you have the easier it is to loose weight and burn calories; even while your body is at rest. Once you start to see results and give exercise a chance, that is when the ball gets rolling.  You will no longer say, “I am not cutt out for exercise.”  You will say, “Why didn’t I start this earlier!” 

Above are just some general concepts about weight loss to help you get started.  Now you need some more specific ideas, recommendations and tips so you can see the big picture of weight loss.  When you make a plan, and set your goals, you are more likely to achieve results!

  1. If you need help ask!  Seek someone that you feel comfortable with.  You can go to a health store such as us, or a personal trainer or your doctor. 
  2. If you need some supplements to get you started and in the right frame of mind this is what I did: Cleansmart 30 days by Renew Life, Alive Brand Relora, Alive Brand CLA, Protein Shake (Brand varies), and Genuine Health Brand Greens +.  This is just an example of what I did.  Keep in mind each of us are different and your supplements may need tweaking.  For example, if you have some serious sugar cravings, you may need PGX by Natural Factors, and some Alive Brand Chromium Picolinate.  Everyone can benefit from a good greens as well as a protein supplement.
  3. Once you have a goal, let your friends and family know.  Having a support group will help you in the end.  We never want to let ouselves down, and we are even less willing to let our friends and family down.  Your loved ones care about you and want to see you succeed!  There is a healthy pressure associated with a support group.
  4. The word “diet” is somewhat negative.  Most people associate diet as something “temporary”.  Diet also has the connotation of having to cutt out all your favourite foods, thus the word diet sometimes feel like torture for some people.  Instead, try to think of it as, “eating right for life” and a chance to explore new foods.  A crash diet is unrealistic.  You will always struggle with weight if you cutt out absolutely everything bad all the time.  Find a balance in your “eating right for life” plan.  Some simple adjustments you can make, which are also sustainable include: reducing the intake of dairy, wheat and refined carbs and sugar, decrease red meat consumption, drink plenty of water, drink green tea to help your metabolism, avoid preservatives and replace sugar with stevia a natural sweetener so you still have something sweet to look forward to.   Eat lots of fibre, this will stabilize your blood sugar and reduce sugar cravings and ultimately poor food choices.  Eat plenty of vegetables and lastly, learn how to make healthy food taste good.  Many people think they do not like vegetables, but sometimes they forget to try new ones, or they overcook them.  Make it your goal to learn how to make veges taste great! 
  5. The 80/20 rule is great too!  The Japanese are famous for  maintaining a healthy waisteline and one of the ways they do this is, they do not eat until they are stuffed meaning 100% full.  They eat until they are 80% full which is comfortable.  You can still move after!  Western society is notorious for over eating.  Also, as mentioned it is impossible to eat a perfect balanced healthy meal 100% of the time.  Therefore, 80% of the time try to eat the the best you can! Say no to the food court, or take a healthy lunch with you to work.  Then, 20% of the time you can take your grandma’s offer and eat a piece of her famous blueberry pie, or you eat your neighbours fresh baked cookie or indulge in the family Thanks Giving dinner. 
  6. Getting yourself active in activities you like!  There truly is something for everyone.  If you do not like the treadmill, there is sports.  If sports are not your forte, there is always a scenic brisk walk.  If you are not one for the outdoors, there are lifestyle activities such as ballroom dancing.  If you are single or you are not interested in meeting anybody, there are also solo activities such as Karate, Tai Chi, or Yoga.  In all seriousness, even if none of those activities are something you like, there is surely something that you can enjoy while benefiting from the elements of physical activity.

Lastly, don’t let loosing weight be a drag or a dark cloud that is constantly hanging over your head.  I remember feeling this way at one point.  I was 30 pounds overweight and I thought it was impossible for me to get back on track.  It took an attitude adjustment, support, a plan, some eating habit changes, incorportating excercise into my daily routine, and some supplements to help me along the way, none of which were stimulants!  It is possible!  Remember you can always come visit us at Alive Health Centre, Morning Sun and Supplements Plus.  You don’t have to do this alone, look forward to seeing you!

Guest on the Beat 94.5 Kid Carson Show: Dr Tasreen Alibhai, N.D.

This morning on The Beat 94.5, the Kid Carson Show had a wonderful guest, Dr Tasreen Alibhai, N.D.  She is

Dr. Tasreen Alabhai N.D. guest on The Beat shares some easy steps to change your life in a big way.

a well known Naturopathic Doctor in the Vancouver area and she was on the morning show to discuss the small changes we can make that will make a big difference.  Part of the problem with New Year resolutions is we make them too large and we become overwhelmed and often times we cannot follow through. 

This is what Dr. Tasreen Alibhai, N.D. had to say about:

  • Key Nutrients, supplements
  • A suggestion for a detox
  • Easy exercise
  • Smoking
  • Getting rid of Belly Fat
  • The importance of Routine
  • Lastly, her most important tip!

If you have never taken any supplement before and you have no idea where to start these were her suggestions, (Note she was not brand specific, because Naturopaths will often have their own lines, if you are not ready to see a Naturopath yet I put a few different brands.  They are excellent quality.

  1. Good quality Multivitamin.  This is your foundation and it will help you with your energy levels, and your exercise program. If you want a one a day try Alive Super One Plus, or if you need a smaller pill try Platinum Multivitamins.
  2. Good quality fish oil with no toxins, they should have IFOS testing.  Alive Wild Salmon Fish Oil with the small fish i.e. sardines is excellent, if you need a higher concentration of EPA and DHA the omega 3 essential fatty acids then you can try Renew Lifes Fish Oils, or Nutrasea.
  3. B-Complex will help you combat stress.  B vitamins are good for so many functions in the body and a good one to try is the Alive B-Complex 100.  There is also a B-50 available in capsule if you have trouble swallowing.  Lastly, Prairie Naturals has an excellenet B-Complex in liquid form.

Next she talked about DETOXING:

She suggested to try letting your organs naturally detoxify themselves.  How do you do this?  This is where you need to truly cutt out sugar, cutt out coffee, fatty foods, alcohol etc.  This gives your body a rest particularily your liver.  This is common sense, but of course you need to eat fruits and vegetables that are rich in dark colours.  She also recommended that you eat veges that are root veges, such as: yams.  Also it is great to consume onions and garlic.  Lastly, rather than drinking juice, coffee and caffinated teas, try having water with lemon.  It is recommended to have the water at room temperature.

Exercise you can handle:

Most of us cannot fit in an intense exercise and if we can we can never stick to it unless we were born to do it and absolutely love it.  Therefore, like many other Doctors and Naturopaths, include moderate exercise of 30 minutes a day.  A brisk walk even counts and it is something that everyone can afford.  Also little lifestyle changes that can make a big difference: park further away from the door, walk to places if possible, take the stairs etc.  All of these things can really add up.

Quitting Smoking?

If you are trying to quit, you need all the help you can get.  Her two suggestions were: load up on antioxidants to help you detox, secondly, you can use the herb Avena Sativa to help reduce nicotene cravings.  She does note that with herbs you should always check with a health care professional to make sure you can take it.

Belly Fat?

Are you doing everything you can to loose stubborn belly fat?  This is nothing new and we have been helping customers with this at Alive Health Centre, Morning Sun and Supplements Plus for years and there has been lots of success.  However there are still people who do not know about the correlation between stress and belly fat.  Everytime we get stressed, Cortisol is a hormone that releases and when we have too much circulating around in our system, belly fat gets produced.  We have a great supplement called Relora that balances Cortisol and reduces your belly fat.  People often combine Relora with CLA which is Conjugated, Linoleic Acid and this is a natural fat burner.

Loose Weight Before the Holidays!

We are all very aware of the trends in the supplement world.  After Christmas

comes weightloss time!  We always see, shed the pounds, melt away the fat and burn those empty calories!  Don’t wait until a specific time of the year to eat healthier and incorporate exercise?  Start early this year and look after yourself during the holidays and in the end your will be much happier and you will enjoy yourself much more over the holidays.

Quick tips and ideas:

1.  Are you frustrated by the mall parking lots?  Avoid the parking madness and walk to the nearest mall or shopping centre in your area.  Not everyone has this luxury, but if you do try it!  You end up getting a great work out from walking a good distance and you do not encounter as much stress trying to battle for a parking spot.  The cool fresh air is fantastic and your circulation improves dramitically with a long walk.  You will feel more energy, less irratible and you will notice that it does not really take that much time out of your day.  Also make sure you choose small gifts so you can manage carrying them home.   By walking you can keep your cortisol hormone down during the holidays; everytime you are stressed cortisol rises and this creates belly fat. 

2.  Stress leads to point number two.  A supplement that is very safe and completely natural is called Relora.  If you suffer from stress and you find the holidays to be even more overwhelming, Relora helps to decrease cortisol and increase your happy hormone called DHEA.  Therefore, Relora helps you with both weight loss, especially that stubborn belly fat and stress management.  It is a great idea to take Relora with the safe and natural fat burner CLA.
